After graduation from Franklin H.S., I worked from February to August 1960 at the Los Angeles Daily Journal, a legal newspaper in downtown Los Angeles, with fellow Celestrial David Eccles. My college work began in September at Los Angeles State College where I met my husband Jim in Spanish class. We married in August of 1962 and lived in Lincoln Heights and South Pasadena until 1968, when our teaching careers took us to San Bernardino County. We moved to Forest Falls in the San Bernardino Mountains in 1970 and have resided here for the past 40 years. We have two children and three grandsons. Our son Chris works for NASA and resides in Houston, TX. Our daughter Colleen resides in Redlands, CA, and is an instructor in the Fire Academy at Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa, and also runs her own personal training business. Jim retired from RUSD in 2000 after 31 years teaching ceramics at Redlands High School. I retired in 2003 after 35 years with the Redlands Unified School District in several positions: as junior high and high school English teacher (17 years); as Team Leader for a federal Teacher Corps program (2 years); as Site Coordinator for a second Teacher Corps program (3 years); and as Coordinator of Career Programs at Redlands High School (13 years). From 1979 to 1985 I taught as a part-time instructor in the School of Education at California State University, San Bernardino. Retirement has given us time to remodel our home, spend time with our grandsons, travel by train (our favorite mode of transportation), and give time to worthy causes. After serving as Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the non-profit agency Building A Generation for five of the seven years since my retirement, I am continuing this year as Board Secretary. Our organization serves families in the East Valley of San Bernardino by operating four Family Resource Centers at Title I elementary schools in the Redlands Unified School District. I love the connection with our amazing staff of social workers and with the work that they accomplish. This is a great way to give back some of my time and talent to the community during retirement. |

After graduation I went to Glendale City College. Shortly after starting college my mother unexpectedly died which changed my life completely. My mom was a widow and I am an only child so that left me 19 years old and, after the state of California took all our furniture, house and car, completely alone with nowhere to go. I wandered from friends home to home for about 1 year then decided I really needed to finish my schooling so I completed my degree in education at UCLA. After this, for the next eight years, I wandered from state to state and job to job. Along the way I got married and had two girls. The marriage did not work out but the girls are wonderful. In 1972 I moved with my girls to Boulder, Colorado. The girls got a great education and I found a wonderful job and a great boss. I worked for a large construction company as a bookkeeper for 17 years until the owner retired the company. During this time I met a wonderful man and we have been married 29 years. After the construction company job I had a travel agency which was very enjoyable with lots of bennies which lasted until 1997 when my husband’s company, IBM/Lockheed Martin moved us to beautiful Colorado Springs. After we retired we starting spending time in Arkansas to help take care of Armstead’s parents. Since we were spending so much time in Arkansas I started a Florist and Gift shop. This keeps me going and is lots of fun. We are now spending more time at our home in Colorado Springs so the flower shop is up for sale and we are starting our move back. As most of you can understand, after being in Arkansas for 9 years we have collected a lot of “stuff” and it will take a while to get it all back home in Colorado. Colorado is such a beautiful place with something to do all year round. I had two very close friends at Franklin, Dottie DeMuth and Andrea Slotwinski. I have lost track of both so if anyone knows where they can be found please let me know. |

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Cal State L.A. Graduated with a BA in Education in 1964 and met my wonderful husband the following week. We were married a year and a half later. Joe was a Marine Corp pilot during the Vietnam War. We lived in Pensacola, FL, Arcadia, Ca & Jasonville, NC during those first five years. We settled in Huntington Beach upon returning to “civilian” life in 1971. Joe started his produce company and I used my teaching experience to do volunteer work and there and in our Villa Park schools where we’ve lived since 1977. We’ve had an opportunity to travel to many wonderful and interesting places and continue to enjoy good health. We are blessed with a loving close knit family; a son and three daughters, their spouses and nine grandchildren. They keep us very busy! I have fond memories of so many of you. I’d like to say thank you for your friendship all those many years ago. It sometimes feels like only yesterday! I hope life has been good to you all. |

Comment: After graduation, it was off to U.C.L.A. for a B.A. in Math and a job in market research at Carrier Corp., DNP Division in City of Industry. My off hours graduate studies halted when I joined IBM in 1966 as a Systems Engineer in Glendale, CA. About this time I married Charmian Bradley and soon we had daughter Christine, now in Austin, TX, followed by son Jeffrey who lives in Plano, TX. In 1971 I joined the L.A. IBM Systems Science Institute and taught advanced systems design and Project Management. Also, some original research led to a new discipline called Communications Systems Management and the popularization of the “User Help Desk” among other management techniques. In 1975, that effort took us to Raleigh, N.C. and a new job in Consulting: Conducting seminars, calling on top executives and helping IBM get into the network management business (I authored the Architectural working paper for IBM’s Communications Systems Division). Moving to Des Moines, IA in 1978 as a System Engineering Manager provided a new experience. From there, it was to Dallas, TX and what became home in 1981. After several management positions, the last as Project Executive for IBM’s Global Services Division, it was time for something new. I took early retirement in 1993 and started a consulting practice for I/S Planning and Business Process Reengineering. By 1995, I was able to retire! During this period, with both of us single for over a decade, I married Lynn Chemerys, an IBM Sr. Management Consultant and we built a home in Coppell, TX. Retirement lasted about five months when an opportunity to manage an international project was too hard to refuse. As Project Director for Tandem Corp., I made many trips to Europe but in 1996 it was time to retire permanently. Now Lynn and I volunteer at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children where I was honored as 2004 Volunteer of the Year. We spend time with the grandbabies (Jeff’s 3 yr. old Jordan and Chris’ 2/1/2 yr. old Quinn), and travel as much as we can to foreign lands (Egypt/Jordan this year). We have a summer place (a small island in Loughborough Lake near Kingston) in Canada that we visit in July and August each year to escape the Texas heat. We feel blessed to have good health, great friends around the world and our family near to us. |

I married my high school sweetheart, but that was short lived. I had two children from this marriage. I have 3 grandchildren. My oldest grandson attends the Univeristy of Idaho; I also have a 14 year old granddaughter and 4 year old grandson. My daughter lives in Idaho and my son lives in KY. I too live in KY, which is where I retired to. In the late 1960's on into the 70's, I worked for the L.A. City Attorney's office as a legal assistant for nearly 10 years. I moved on to working in private practice after that. The most interesting area of law I worked in was in medical malpractice law. However, after working many years in the legal arena, I decided to retire. I currently live in the country outside of Bowling Green, KY with my two pooches. I have spent many years ballroom dancing and continue to do so. I've been on a dance team and performed/competed at the US Open at the Disneyland Hotel in Orange County. I've competed in several swing dance competitions. I travel to TN or Louisville to dance and meet many interesting people along the way. I won't be giving up my dancing any time soon. I go to the gym 3-5 days a week to stay in shape, and I hike and walk as well. |
